Will Luke Fickel become the next Bill Lynch in the Big Ten Conference?

The circumstances are completely different. The Ohio State University is in trouble with the NCAA and many have said that Jim Tressel had to go in Columbus.

Yes, it's Memorial Day, but in Columbus, it's the day that Tressel said "goodbye" to one of the prime jobs in all of College Football.

So, will Luke Fickel be the next Bill Lynch and take the interim tag to head coach, as Lynch did at Indiana, after the death of former IU coach Terry Hoeppner? Lynch replaced Hoeppner in 2007, leading IU to a 7-6 season. Lynch was dismissed, after the 2010 season though, when IU lost for the third straight year.

Some call for the Death Penalty for Ohio State. However, that would be terrible for College Football, especially the Big Ten Conference. How did the Southwest Conference fare the demise of SMU? Ohio State's ills are not good for the conference, but OSU is not SMU either, and the conference's most consistent program just took a hit.

Luke Fickel will likely wear the interim tag for the 2011 season. The 2011 Big Ten conference race just opened up even more, with the six-time defending champions of the conference joining the ranks of Michigan, Indiana and Minnesota welcoming a new coach for the 2011 season.

The 2011 Big Ten season will certainly be an interesting one.

  • Nebraska joins Big Ten and conference will host first ever Big Ten title game

  • Legends and Leaders

  • Michigan hires Brady Hoke to replace

  • Indiana hires Kevin Wilson, most recently OC at Oklahoma

  • Minnesota hires Jerry Kill, most recently NIU's head coach

  • Luke Fickel moves from five game interim coach to 2011 interim coach, upon news of Tressel's resignation in Columbus for Ohio State

It's Memorial Day ... the 2011 Big Ten season just got a little more interesting!

Battle for 100: Kirk Ferentz vs. Bill Lynch, as #14 Iowa @ IU

The Iowa Hawkeyes (6-2, 3-1 Big Ten) face the Indiana Hoosiers (4-4, 0-4 Big Ten) in Bloomington on Saturday at 11 a.m. Both head coaches are going for 100Th win as head coaches. Kirk Ferentz is in his 15Th season, 12Th at Iowa, while Bill Lynch is in his 18Th season and fourth season at IU.

Further, it is Senior Day in Bloomington, since IU's final Big Ten home game will be played at FedEx Field vs. Penn State later this month, on November 20Th.

The Hawkeyes are two games away from being perfect. In those two losses, @ Arizona and vs. Wisconsin, special teams woes and miscues cost Iowa dearly. The key on the road in Bloomington will likely be special teams and turnovers.

Iowa will be without sophomore running back Adam Robinson, due to a concussion in last week's Michigan State game. Iowa is banged up this season at two key positions: running back and linebacker. Two true freshmen will start for Iowa in key positions: RB Marcus Coker and MLB James Morris. Iowa is without three key players in the LB position that started the season, including a fourth player in the middle.

The Hawkeyes need to play sound football. IU will likely look to get into a shootout in Bloomington. IU is very dangerous in a shootout, as last year's game turned out to be for three quarters.

Iowa shutdown Michigan State last Saturday, with outstanding defense. Iowa would do well to beat IU with defense on Saturday. Iowa has an offense that should get some points over IU.

Prediction:

#14 Iowa 24
IU 7
