Less than 30 days until the kickoff of the 2012 College Football Season

We hope everyone is have a Jolly Good 2012 ... as the Summer XXX Olympic Games are in full gear in London this August 2012! After beginning blogging back in 2007 or so, we have taken some time off to enjoy Life, Liberty and other Pursuits of Happiness in our life.

College Basketball was interesting in the beginning of 2012. It was great to see the Creighton Bluejays win The Valley and make the 2012 NCAA Tournament in Greg McDermott's second season at the helm on the Hilltop. It was great to see a victory over Alabama in the Second Round and a tough Third Round loss at North Carolina, as well.

With all-American Doug McDermott back for his junior season in 2012-13, the Creighton Bluejays should be a Top 25 College Basketball team again. Down in Iowa City, coach Fran McCaffery should have a better brand of Iowa Basketball for 2012-13, as he enters his third season at the helm for the Hawkeyes.

The Heartland has been hot, hot and dry, dry throughout the Summer of 2012.  We hope you have all enjoyed the Dog Days of Summer 2012 style!  It hasn't been hot like this, since the Summer of 1988, when we moved back to Cedar Rapids.  Of course, weather like this year is causing some people to reflect on the dust bowl days of the 1930s ...

In less than 30 days, the 2012 College Football season will kickoff on Thursday, August 30Th.  The first game up will be a SEC showdown on ESPN with South Carolina at Vanderbilt.  There will be some outstanding games the first weekend of the 2012 season.  Plenty of questions in 2012:

Creighton University: one coach departs, but a new coach is found for the Bluejays

The official announcement will come Tuesday, rather than Monday. Dana Altman officially becomes Oregon's head coach today, and Creighton will replace Altman with Iowa State basketball coach Greg McDermott.

It was likely time after Sweet 16 years in Omaha ...

Three years ago, the University of Iowa job was open and Dana Altman appeared to be interested. But, Iowa AD Gary Barta appeared to be interested in Todd Lickliter and Kevin Stallings, so Altman, who appeared set to make a move, didn't get the job. Interested in moving on then, Altman got talked into the University of Arkansas job. But, after going through the introduction in Fayetteville, he asked out and asked friend and Creighton AD Bruce Rasmussen for a second chance.

Some Creighton fans were a little taken back by the entire process. Recruiting and player stability seemed to be a little off. Well, now Dana Altman is off to Eugene, Oregon and a new job.

Spring Break has just ended for both the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa.

When rumors began flying around that coach Todd Lickliter was not going to be retained for his fourth season at Iowa, two names were mentioned. The first was a former Iowa graduate and current Providence coach Keno Davis. The other is leading his team into the Sweet 16 and resides just up the road (80 miles) at the University of Northern Iowa, coach Ben Jacobsen.

Iowa athletic director Gary Barta has his work cut out for himself. Firing an Iowa coach, even after a poor 10-22 season, when four more years remain on his contract, doesn't fly real well in Iowa City. There is a lot of speculation to the reasons why?

The bottom line is Iowa needs a fresh start, with a new head coach in men's basketball. As the women face #1 seed Stanford in the second round tonight of the women's NCAA Tournament, many Hawkeye fans will be interested to know, what is Gary Barta going to deliver for a men's basketball coach in 2010?

Final comment: The Todd Lickliter era is over in Iowa City at the University of Iowa. It has not been a pretty three years in the Big Ten for the Hawkeyes. The women played well, but the men's program experienced the poorest overall season in Hawkeye history and finishing #9 in the Big Ten and capturing home-home wins over the Indiana Hoosiers wasn't enough for another year for Coach Lickliter in Iowa City. The coaching search is on.

Thoughts on Iowa basketball coach Todd Lickliter and the next two seasons for the Hawkeye program

I have been an Iowa football and basketball fan, since 1974. I am a football first guy and I follow other basketball programs, such as my alma mater, in basketball, but I am a Hawkeye fan.

The past three years have certainly proved the Good, the Bad and the Ugly in Iowa basketball.

Like in football, all we can wish for is a competitive program in the Big Ten. Our demographics clearly suggest that.

From 1981-2009, Iowa Football has become a program to be proud of. As the Wall Street Journal pointed out after Iowa was 10-1, the Iowa program is good for College Football. Coach J. Hayden Fry and Coach Kirk Ferentz have both been a great source of pride for the University, the State and the sport.

The Evy era was great on the field, but his time as a AD was some of the lowest points in our history. The term Ugly is appropriate.

Iowa Basketball has three great seasons, two back to back in the 1950s and the 1980 season.

Lute Olson brought in one point guard and rode him to the top and his next job. Ralph Miller was good too, but his top team at Iowa couldn't play defense, as a recent story by a friend pointed out, but they were able to out score most opponents in a super season.

Coach Todd Lickliter appears to be a great fit for Iowa. The Iowa program has had a poor decade, since the 2001 season, which was the last time Iowa won a first round game in the NCAAs. Heck, look at the University of Michigan in basketball. They went from NCAA Champs to a decade of decay.

Personally, I believe Iowa is in a better position to succeed in basketball than Michigan. Iowa has a long climb to make, but let's be patient, and like the ride in 1999-2001 in football; the next two seasons (2010-11 and 2011-12) should be worthy to let unfold.

If Coach Lickliter and his staff can take five new parts and develop them as we are seeing with May, Cougil and Payne ... the future should be bright for Iowa.

The product has declined. We saw that during the Dr. Tom Davis era, we saw that throughout the Steve Alford era and the Lickliter nearly three seasons reminds people of the three awful years under Dick Schultz.

Life often is the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. I am looking forward to some better fruit and better dividends over the next two seasons. Has Iowa ever had a coach who hates losing at the level our current coach does?

Lickliter appears to be a good person, a competitive coach, a solid X and O guy, a teacher and a stand up guy. I wish Todd Lickliter good health and look forward to the next couple of years ...

Iowa Basketball is 1-0 outside and 0-4 within the CBE Classic to open the '09-'10 season

The 2009-10 basketball season for the University of Iowa has not gotten off to a good start. The Hawkeyes did get one victory over Bowling Green in game 3 of the season. But, the Hawkeyes went 0-4 in the CBE Classic. The Hawkeyes lost two games at home in the on-campus part of the CBE Classic. Then, they followed it up with back to back games in Kansas City, both losses. The Hawkeyes fell to #3 Texas on Monday, then vs. Wichita State tonight.

Iowa is now 1-4 to open the season.

It's not likely going to be a pretty season for coach Todd Lickliter, now in his third season, at Iowa. The Hawkeyes have only two upper classmen and are not at full strength with a 13 player roster.

Looking at the teams in the CBE Classic field. Clearly the University of Iowa played the toughest slate of teams. Duquense and Texas-San Antonio were two of the better bottom bracket teams.

The bottom line is Iowa is not a very good team right now. They are inconsistent and lack a lot of what it takes to compete with the better programs in the NCAAs.

If you are an Iowa fan in 2009-10, it would serve you well to be patient. Otherwise, it will get pretty negative at times.

Remember, this is the time for Thanksgiving. On the football side, Iowa finished 10-2, 6-2 in the Big Ten, which is good for second place. Time will tell in the next couple of weeks, whether Iowa will pull in their second BCS bid in the history of Iowa football.

The battling mid-majors vs. the middling majors on Selection Sunday

Who should be in and who should be in the NIT? Selection Sunday is Today for the Big Dance!

Watching the discussion on ESPN this morning with discussion of Creighton vs. Penn State and/or the University of Arizona.

First, don't reward 9-9 in the Big Ten or Pac Ten folks over a solid mid-major co-champion. Yes, we are talking a comparison with the Creighton Bluejays, which has been discussed on ESPN today. Look at the Conference Standings folks.

Creighton's 14-4 and a co-championship in the MVC is a worthy discussion boys. Doesn't the #9 ranked conference deserve two? Throw St. Mary's-CA off then folks. Winning in the conference means something, when we are talking a Top 10 conference and bubble teams.

Creighton is 11-1 in the past 12 games. Clearly, playing the worse game in their final game, has Creighton on the bubble. Which is too bad, because the 11 game win streak was an outstanding display of basketball. Wins on the road, including a solid win at the University of Northern Iowa, the MVC's automatic bid.

By the way, when we listen to Digger Phelps speak on ESPN, how much does he hold a grudge against mid-majors that beat him, while at Notre Dame or after, for that matter? Creighton beat UNI in Cedar Falls and beat Dayton, ending their 8 game winning streak with a 18 point win. The Auburn Tigers were 0-2 vs. UNI and Dayton.

The Big Ten is looking at a pretty full cup of teams entering the Big Dance. The MVC deserves two bids in 2009 folks. UNI and Creighton, both would look good in a match up with some of those worthy Big Ten bubble teams. Maybe the NCAA will do just that in their effort to keep teams closer to home, due to the economic times we all face today.

Selection Weekend for the Big Dance: Will the MVC get 2 bids in 2009?

The University of Northern Iowa won the automatic bid last weekend as winners of the 2009 Missouri Valley Conference tournament. Now, a waiting game for the Creighton Bluejays this weekend, as the Jays hope to be among the 34 teams selected as an at-large selection to the 2009 NCAA Tournament on Sunday.

Here's to ESPN bracketology expert Joe Lunardi keeping the Jays in throughout the weekend and scoring it right for the Creighton Bluejays, who had some ups and downs earlier in the year, but finished with 11 wins in their final 12 games of the season.

The Creighton Bluejays won a share of the MVC regular season title with UNI. The Jays picked a bad time to have their worse game of the season, but the 2008-09 Bluejays finished the season with a 26-7 record, 14-4 in the MVC.

Creighton, UNI both finish tied for first place in the final MVC men's BB standings

The Creighton Bluejays (14-4, 25-6) and the Northern Iowa Panthers (14-4, 20-10) closed out the Missouri Valley Conference men's basketball regular season winning the co-championship on Saturday. The Bluejays are hot, winning ten straight games, nine in the Valley to finish with UNI at 14-4. Creighton beat #3 Illinois State (11-7, 22-8) 74-70 at the Qwest Center Omaha to avenge a disappointing loss at home last season.

Arch Madness, the State Farm MVC basketball tournament, will take place this week in St. Louis, beginning on Thursday with the play-in games, with the finals airing on CBS Sports next Sunday afternoon. The top four seeds are: UNI, Creighton, Illinois State and Bradley (10-6, 17-13).

With the major conferences getting most of the at-large seeds in the NCAA Tournament, neither Creighton nor UNI have earned a lock for the Big Dance, with a co-championship in the Valley.

Creighton is certainly a team that would be fun to see make the Big Dance in 2009. Senior Booker Woodfox is certainly one of the many unsung heroes in mid-major basketball, as Creighton's win over George Mason in the Bracket Buster game on Feb. 21 showed.

Arch Madness is always a joy to follow. Today, as we celebrate March arriving and the coming of Spring. Who will make the 2009 Big Dance is in full drive?

UNI and Creighton sit tied for 1st Place in the MVC

UNI's win over Illinois State 69-67 on Tuesday, coupled with Creighton's road win at Missouri State last night 65-59, as well, leave both teams tied at 13-4 entering the final weekend of conference regular season play.

Creighton will host Illinois State to close out the conference play on Saturday on ESPN2, while Northern Iowa will host Evansville the same evening.

The Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, also known as Arch Madness, will take place March 5Th through 8Th in St. Louis, MO, with the title game on CBS Sports.

January 7, 2009 - The Day After

The Northern Iowa Panthers ended an 11 game losing streak in Omaha and a eight game losing steak to the Creighton Jays last night, after the 69-66 win at the Qwest Center Omaha.

Congratulations to the Panthers in getting the monkey off their back.

Hopefully, the Jays will get the return game in Cedar Falls on February 8, 2009, when the two teams meet again.

January 2, 2009: Cotton, Liberty and Sugar Bowl games are on for today

It was a great start to the New Year yesterday enjoying the Outback and Rose Bowl games, along with parts of the Capital One, Gator and Orange Bowl games. Congratulations to Iowa and USC in very strong performances. Nebraska pulled on their second bowl win under coach Bo Pelini, the first was in 2003 as a interim coach. Georgia and Virginia Tech were both winners.

Today, we have the Cotton, Liberty and Sugar Bowl games up. The majority of bowl games are in the books, but three major BCS games are yet to be played, including the BCS Championship game.

The 2009 Cotton Bowl: Texas Tech (11-1) vs. Mississippi (8-4) in this Big 12 vs. SEC match up on FOX. The Texas Tech Red Raiders finished in a three-way tied for first in the Big 12 South, while the Mississippi Rebels second in the SEC West.

In the last five bowl games, Texas Tech's Mike Leach is 4-1. The lone loss, the Red Raiders lost 10-13 in the 2006 Cotton Bowl to Alabama, in the Big 12 vs. SEC match up. The Rebels are playing in their first bowl game, since the 2004 Cotton Bowl. By the way, the Rebels won 31-28, in the SEC vs. Big 12 match up, to Oklahoma State

It was a great start to the 2009 year with the January 1 bowl games. The NHL enjoyed a little ice time at Wrigley Field and the College Basketball season is beginning to heat up as most conferences are beginning conference play. For example, the Creighton Bluejays are off to a 2-0 start with wins over Wichita State and Indiana State to open the 2008-09 Missouri Valley Conference basketball season.

Iowa basketball ends OOC play at 10-3, with 58-43 win over Western Illinois

The University of Iowa on a icy and tough traveling night in Iowa City beat Western Illinois 58-43 to finish out pre-Big Ten campaign at 10-3. The Hawkeyes will hit the road and begin Big Ten conference play at Ohio State on New Year's Eve.

Jermain Davis and Jake Kelly lead Iowa with 13 points tonight at Carver Hawkeye Arena, while Matt Gatens finishes with a double-double, with 11 points and 10 rebounds. David Dubois and Josh Rivers lead Western Illinois with 18 points and 11 points, respectively.

Western Illinois falls to 4-8 on the season. Iowa will face a 9-1 Buckeyes team on Wednesday night. The Buckeyes lost their first game of the season today falling at home to West Virginia, 48-76.

Iowa wins at The Citadel in Basketball, but former Hawkeye and Packer passed away today

Former Iowa football and Hall of Fame Green Bay Packer Bob Jeter has passed away per the University of Iowa post game radio broadcast on WMT Radio 600-AM in Cedar Rapids.

The Iowa Hawkeyes beat The Citadel on road 70-48. Coach Todd Lickliter's young Hawkeyes move to 3-0 on the season.

However, our thoughts and prayer go out to Bob Jeter, his family, his friends and the Iowa and Green Bay sports families tonight.

As a fan of both teams, Bob Jeter was a special player, during his time at the University of Iowa and in the NFL, for the Green Bay Packers.

Iowa Basketball moves to 2-0 on the season tonight

The Iowa Hawkeyes (2-0) defeated UT-San Antonio (0-2) tonight at Carver-Hawkeye Arena 73-67 to open the season with back to back wins at home.

Coach Todd Lickliter is beginning his second season at the University of Iowa, after a successful era at Butler.

Six newcomers made up the ten players who played tonight for the Hawkeyes. Coach Lickliter's first season ended 13-19. But, many expect improvement for the Hawkeyes in year two under Lickliter.

Iowa travels Thursday to The Citadel for their next ball game.
