Former Iowa Football Player Tyler Sash Passes

Sash was standout defensive back for Hawkeyes from 2008-10

Former Iowa three-year safety 9 Tyler Sash passed away at age 27.

Sept. 8, 2015
IOWA CITY, Iowa - - Former University of Iowa defensive back Tyler Sash passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 8. He was 27. Funeral arrangements are pending.

“We are all very saddened to hear about the untimely loss of Tyler,” said Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz. “It is always so difficult when it involves someone this young. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to Tyler’s family during this extremely difficult time – and we want them to know they are not in this alone. The commitment, passion, and excitement that Tyler brought to football and to life will always endear him to Hawkeye coaches, teammates, and fans. He touched our hearts in many ways and will be missed by all of us.”

The Oskaloosa, Iowa, native lettered from 2008-10 before declaring for the NFL Draft prior to his senior season. Sash was selected by the New York Giants in the sixth round of the 2011 draft and earned a Super Bowl championship in his rookie season.

Sash started the final 34 game of his Iowa career and had 37 career starts. He ranks fifth in career interceptions (13) and shares the Iowa single-game record with three thefts in a 35-3 win at Iowa State in 2009. He is Iowa’s career leader with 392 interception return yards, a total that ranks fourth all-time in the Big Ten. His 203 return yards in 2009 ties for second best in the Big Ten for a single season.

Sash earned first team All-Big Ten honors in both 2009 and 2010, and was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award following each season. He earned Associated Press third team All-America honors in 2009 and was named to several freshman All-America squads in 2008.

Sash had an 86-yard interception return for a touchdown in a 2009 win over Indiana, which ranks fifth longest in school history. He set Iowa bowl records for longest return (48 yards) and interception return yards (94) in Iowa’s 2009 Outback Bowl win over South Carolina. He concluded his Iowa career with 217 tackles and was twice a member of the UI Leadership Group.

Last Thursday night, the Stanford @ Washington game was an outstanding game in the Pac 12 in Week 5.  But the game Friday night was a total one sided game between BYU-Hawaii.     With three games up tonight, hopefully college football fans will have something to enjoy, with games featuring conference match ups from the Sun Belt, C-USA and Pac 12.   The NFL also offers a game on Thursday night, as the old St. Louis franchise, the Arizona Cardinals (4-0) return to St. Louis to face the St. Louis Rams (2-2) on the NFL Network.

Packers vs. Saints: NFL 2011 kickoffsas the 2011 and 2010 Super Bowl Champs square off from Lambeau Field

We enjoyed a Labor Day weekend and the kickoff of College Football recently. Now, it's time for the NFL, with kickoff tonight of the 2011 NFL Season! From Obama to 9/11-10 years later to the NFL to College Football... plenty of action ahead over the next five days.

Will it be a rematch in Super Bowl 46 from Lucas Field in Indianapolis on February 5, 2012 be a rematch of last year? We wouldn't complain, since we have always enjoyed both NFL programs.

Lucas Field will be an exciting place this football season, with the first Big Ten Championship Game on December 3, 2011, then the Super Bowl.

Hawkeye Parent: NFL assistant coach with Philadephia Eagles

It's March and here's a great video about Iowa DB Greg Castillo's father, Juan Castillo, who is a NFL assistant coach.

Great story!

Juan Castillo is currently involved with the NFL combine, where college players from around the country, including nearly ten from the University of Iowa are going through workouts in preparation of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Interesting Football week approaching: National Signing Day on Wednesday, with Super Bowl XLV on Sunday

The Class of 2011 will see many sign on the dotted line on Wednesday. Unlike college basketball, there isn't an early signing period in college football. Players who are eligible for January term from junior colleges or graduating early from high school can sign in December or prior to enrollment, but Wednesday is huge in the College Football world with National Signing Day.

The Pro Bowl will be played on Sunday, January 30Th in Hawaii. For the second season, the Pro Bowl is now played the Sunday ahead of the Super Bowl. The NFL typically makes good moves and moving the Pro Bowl, within the window of the season was another example of a good move by the NFL.

Super Bowl XLV should be a great match up, spotlighting two of the better franchises in NFL history.

  • Pittsburgh Steelers (7-1 in Super Bowl history, the all-time winning franchise)

  • Green Bay Packers (3-1 in Super Bowl history and winners of the first two games)

It should be a good week for those who enjoy football. There will be some joys and some likely sorrows, as players sign with various colleges throughout the NCAA and the biggest football game of the year is played in Arlington, Texas. The Super Bowl has something for everyone ...

  • Football
  • Commercials
  • Food
  • A gathering with friends and family
  • Music - Black Eyed Peas will be the halftime show
  • Fill in the blank

The only thing missing is a national holiday, after all, the Super Bowl is America's Game!

NFL Kickoffs tonight with Minnesota vs. New Orleans

As a Green Bay Packer fan, we have our favorite, but we typically enjoy both the Vikings and Bears from time to time, since we know so many fans of both teams.

Video: NFL: Week 1 Preview - The Associated Press

College Football is first and foremost, but by Super Bowl time, the NFL will get our attention!

It should be a great 2010 College Football season and we expect no less from the NFL.

Happy Birthday Coach and One Week from Kick off of the NFL preseason

Today, August 1, 2010 is Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz's birthday. The Hawkeye coach, who is entering his 12Th season as head coach, turns 55 today.

The NFL kicks off the preseason in seven days. The Hall of Fame Game from Canton, Ohio will kickoff at 7 pm CT on NBC on August 8Th.

  • NFL Hall of Fame Game: Cincinnati vs. Dallas from Canton, Ohio
Look for 'If the Stars Align' to hit area Hy-Vees this week. The Gazette is offering an Iowa football season preview magazine this season. Hy-Vee stores and drug stores will carry it for $3.95.

It worked at Nebraska, will the stars align for Iowa ever? Dr. Tom Osborne stayed the course and hit paydirt late in his career. Hawkeye fans often dream of the opportunity be in the top spotlight. Of course, only ten FBS schools have ever won a BCS title. Nebraska's success under Osborne came before the BCS Championships kicked off during the 1998 season.

For the University of Iowa football program, the Hawkeyes have noticed their own trend in the Big Ten Conference. Over the past five seasons, one team is always on top, though they have shared two titles:

  • The Ohio State Buckeyes - going for their sixth straight Big Ten title in '10

A Transition Weekend: July 31 to August 1

Well, Summer has hit the "dog days" for sure!

It has been a busy seven months in 2010. We haven't been able to post as often as one would like on our two blogs.

NFL camps are opening up and NCAA football camps will be opening soon with plenty of talk going on! Ohio State doesn't want to talk 2011! Even prep football will begin in August!

By Labor Day weekend, the 2010 college football season will kick off. Followed by the NFL in the following week.

The Iowa Hawkeyes will kick off the 2010 season vs. Eastern Illinois. Back to back seasons opening with a FCS opponent nicknamed the Panthers, after the exciting finish in 2009 opener vs. UNI.

Sunday Bowl Game tonight, after busy day in the NFL with Steelers vs. Packers going down to the Wire

Next up on Sunday, December 20, 2009:
7:30 p.m. Central Time kickoff on ESPN
New Orleans Bowl from New Orleans, LA
Sun Belt vs. C-USA
Middle Tennessee vs. Southern Mississippi

The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders finished 7-1 in the Sun Belt in 2009, with an overall record of 9-3 on the season. While the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, they finished third in the C-USA East Division with a 5-3 record, 7-5 overall. An ESPN audience can tune in to see the Blue Raiders vs. the Golden Eagles square off in the Louisiana Super Dome.

Southern Miss is returning to the New Orleans Bowl in 2009 again, after finishing 7-6 in 2008 with a 30-27 OT win over Troy. The Golden Eagles are 9-8 overall in bowl games. Coach Larry Fedora is in his second season at the helm for the Golden Eagles.

Middle Tennessee State is coming off a 5-7 record in 2008. The Blue Raiders are making only their second bowl trip ever in the school's history. The Blue Raiders lost 14-31 to Central Michigan in the 2006 Motor City Bowl. Coach Rick Stockstill is in his fourth season at the helm for the Blue Raiders.

Middle Tennessee State enters the game on a six game win streak. The wins all came in conference play. Southern Miss lost their final conference game to lose out in an opportunity for the C-USA Title in 2009.

Prediction:
Southern Miss 30, Middle Tennessee State 17

In the NFL today: Pittsburgh beats Green Bay 37-36 on the final play of the game. Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin's failed onside kick attempt with the Steelers up 30-28 late provided plenty of drama for everyone watching. But, the Steelers took the ball all the way down the field in the final two minutes. Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisberger's career high 503 yards passing and a final TD pass from 18 yards on the final play of the game was the difference. Wow!

Are we ready for some Football?

Well, it's nice to be back online to update our blog, after a ten day break. The College Football season kicks off in less than three weeks.

The NFL is in full swing with preseason football. Just turn into the NFL Network, if you need a fix on some preseason football. Of course, don't ask Brett Favre to step up and get involved in preseason football. Rumor has it, he will be back at age 40.

We have been reading and checking out the preview magazines and various fan comments for the 2009 upcoming college football season. It's hard to get a real good handle on who is #1 across the various conferences. In many cases, parity and question marks lead one to have some questions on more teams than not for 2009.

Other than Florida and Texas, is there a clear cut favorite any where else? Right now, we would say the 2009 college football season will be one of surprise across the Top 25.
