Postgame Notes from Iowa vs. Northern Illinois in Chicago on September 1

Catching Iowa Football with Kirk Ferentz on Sunday, we thought we would share the postgame notes on Iowa:

Iowa outscored Northern Illinois 9-0 in the fourth quarter to beat the Huskies, 18-17, today in Chicago. The Hawkeyes improved to 8-0 all-time against the Huskies, and won their 12th straight season opener. The win also snapped Northern Illinois' nine-game winning streak, which had been the longest in the nation.

The one-point victory was Iowa's first one-point win since defeating Northern Iowa, 17-16, in the 2009 season opener (Sept. 5).

The Hawkeyes rushed for 139 yards. Since 2010, the Hawkeyes are 15-2 when rushing for more than 120 yards.

PK Meyer made 4-5 field goals, converting 22, 30, 34 and 50-yarders, while missing one from 40. The five attempts matches a school record (Meyer at Indiana in 2010 and Kyle Schlicher at Minnesota in 2004). The four field goals made equals a career high; Meyer made four at Indiana (2010) and Iowa State (2011). The 50-yarder equals a career long. Meyer now has 171 points, moving past Ladell Betts, David Hudson and Marvin McNutt for 11th on Iowa's all-time scoring chart. He has made 32-42 career field goal attempts.

Iowa started on offense today. The Hawkeyes have started contests on offense in 136-of-163 games under Kirk Ferentz. Iowa is 15-12 in the games it has started on defense under Ferentz.

True freshmen who saw action in today's season opener include: RB Greg Garmon, P Connor Kornbrath, and DB Kevin Buford.

Iowa started an all-Iowa offensive line today: LT Brandon Scherff (Denison), LG Matt Tobin (Dyersville), C James Ferentz (Iowa City), RG Austin Blythe (Williamsburg), and RT Brett Van Sloten (Decorah).

QB James Vandenberg was 21-33 for 129 yards today. The senior signal caller connected with six different receivers. Vandenberg had a 16-yard rush in the second quarter, equaling a career long. Vandenberg has completed 305-532 pass attempts for 3,666 yards and 28 touchdowns in his career. His 3,666 yards passing ranks ninth in Iowa career history.

Sophomore RB Damon Bullock led the team with 150 yards on 30 attempts today. Both were career bests. Bullock's 23-yard touchdown with 2:15 left in the fourth quarter was his first career touchdown.

WR Kevonte Martin-Manley led the team in catches (6) and WR Keenan Davis led the team in receiving yards (40).

Defensively, Tom Donatell had six tackles and forced his first career fumble. Joe Gaglione also added six tackles and his first career forced fumble. Linebackers James Morris and Anthony Hitches each had a team-high eight stops. DL Joe Gaglione forced his first career fumble, while DL Carl Davis recovered his first fumble on the third play of the third quarter.

Iowa collected a fumble recovery in the third quarter and turned that takeaway into three points. The Hawkeye defense has collected at least one takeaway in 65 of its last 75 games, dating back to 2006. Northern Illinois did not collect a takeaway today.

P Connor Kornbrath punted three times for 124 yards (41.3 avg.) today, including a long of 51 yards in the first period. P John Wienke punted one time for 43 yards.

Iowa was 2-3 in the red zone today, making two field goals and missing another. The Hawkeyes have scored on 151 of the last 171 red zone possessions (101 TDs and 50 FGs), dating back to the Michigan State game in 2008. Iowa is 132-152 combined inside the red zone its last 44 games. Northern Illinois was 2-2 in the red zone (1 FG, 1 TD).

Iowa dominated the time of possession today, 38:42-21:18.

PK Mike Meyer converted a 34-yard field on Iowa's opening possession. Iowa's opening scoring drive consisted of 58 yards on 13 plays in 6:52. RB Damon Bullock had 41 yards rushing on the Hawkeyes' first drive. Northern Illinois did not score on its first possession.

Iowa returns to Iowa City for its home opener against Iowa State for the 60th game in the Cy-Hawk Series.  Iowa State defeated Iowa last season in Ames 45-42 in triple overtime, but haven't won in Iowa City, since 2002 and a historic night game in the series.

Iowa defeats Northern Illinois 18-17 in Chicago after fourth quarter rally

Bringing back memories of Mike Sanders saving Iowa's day in the early 1990s at Wisconsin ... today, sophomore RB Damon Bullock ran 30 times for 150 yards and Iowa's lone TD in a 18-17 win over Northern Illinois in Soldier Field in Chicago.

To close out the game in the fourth quarter, Iowa's special teams, defense and he running of Bullock fuel Iowa's win over a NIU team that held the nation's longest winning streak.

It was a heartbreaking lost for Northern Illinois who controlled both line of scrimmages throughout much of the game.

Iowa (1-0) will head back to Iowa City for four straight at home he rest of the month of September.  Northern Illinois (0-1) will return to DeKalb for UT-Martin.

It's finally arrived: Game Day for the 2012 Iowa Hawkeyes...

Win - lose - draw... It's Great to be a Hawkeye...

This is always a great time of the year.  The opening of another College Football season and the fIrst Game Day Saturday.  The Big Ten is off to a 2-0 start, thanks to fellow Legends division rivals, Minnesota and #12 Michigan State, with wins respectively on Thursday and Friday night.

Saturday, September 1st from Soldier Field in Chicago, with a 2:30 p.m. kickoff on ESPNU, Iowa vs. Northern Illinois. Game on!

Iowa has an excellent opportunity and foundation heading into the season. How will the pigskin bounce in 2012?  We shall soon see.

- Kirk Ferentz enters his 14th season as head coach at Iowa.
- Iowa will have two new coordinators with extensive experience in coaching. One outside Iowa and the Big Ten and another from within Iowa and the Big Ten.
- Iowa welcomes two brand new assistant coaches who were both former players for the University of Iowa.  Both bring NFL experiences and youth to the coaching staff.
- Iowa's remaining coaching assistants have lengthy experience wIth the program, though new roles are part of the duties and assignments of many in 2012.
- The 2012 team is young, but there appears to be a good mix of senior and junior leadership mixed in with three promising recruiting classes for Iowa. We shall soon see if the parts fall into place this season.
- Game captains will be part of the 2012 leadership team, lead by senior QB James Vandenberg, senior C James Ferentz, senior CB/PR Micah Hyde and junior MLB James Morris.
- In 1981, Iowa head coach J Hayden Fry at the time, hired a young coach to take over the O-Line duties before the start of Fry's third season. Kirk Ferentz was a young grad assistant out of Pitt, who became a part of an Iowa team that finished 8-4, won the Big Ten title and represented the Big Ten in the 1982 Rose Bowl, the first invite under Fry and the first trip to Pasadena for Iowa, since 1959.
- 21 years later before the kickoff of the 2012 season, another young O-Line coach has been hired at Iowa by the name of Ferentz, as Brian joins hIs father at Iowa with experience as an assistant in the NFL and as a former Iowa player under his Dad.

Iowa has been forecasted by many to finish 8-4 this season. Unlike 1982, that exact record may be tough to capture a Big Ten title today, but the schedule this season provides an opportunity for Iowa, despite the many hurdles along the way.  The biggest hurdles appear to be at the end of the season, as Iowa closes the season in 2012 at Michigan and vs. new rival Nebraska.

The first hurdle begins in Chicago vs. Northern Illinois.  Our game prediction: IOWA 27, Northern Illinois 15.

Saturday, September 1st is a special day,  wIth the birthday of Iowa radio color analyst Ed Podolak, my wife's birthday and the kickoff of another football season for the Hawkeyes, Cornhuskers, Panthers and Cyclones.  It's even the kickoff for Badgers and Wolverines, oh my ...

Good choice in Terrelle Pryor as pre-season offensive player of the year, but not sure agree with defensive pick

The Big Ten media has picked Ohio State junior QB Terrelle Pryor for the offensive nod for the second straight season and Michigan State senior LB Greg Jones for the defensive nod for the second straight season.

Pryor in '09 lead Ohio State to their fifth straight Big Ten title, then victory in the 2010 Rose Bowl, with a win over Oregon.

Jones is a tackling machine for the Spartans, but MSU finished 6-7 overall in '09 and came up short in competing for a Big Ten title. Our choice would be Iowa senior DE Adrian Clayborn, who was dominating in wins over Arizona, Penn State and Georgia Tech for Iowa. He is a fine athlete at the DE position for the Iowa Hawkeyes, who finished second to Ohio State in the Big Ten in '09. The Hawkeyes lost in OT the the Buckeyes by a field goal in Columbus last season.

Speculation on Sunday in Iowa was surrounded true freshman A.J. Derby moving from QB to LB. Reports out of Chicago indicate that speculation was premature and that Derby will enter fall camp at QB. Derby is the son of former Iowa LB John Derby, who played on Iowa's last Rose Bowl team during the 1990 season.

The 2010 College Football Season should be an outstanding. The Big Ten Conference hopes to provide a lot of excitement both within the conference and nationally. In 2011, Nebraska will move to the Big Ten to become the 12Th member.

There is talk of a 2011 Big Ten Conference title game. Further, like the Pac Ten, look for the Big Ten to move from eight conference games to nine in the near future.
