Four Group of 5 programs and two FBS Independents kick off the 2018 College Football season on Saturday, including the MWC opener between Hawaii (3-9, 1-7 MWC West in '17) and Colorado State (7-6, 5-3 MWC Mountain in '17) from Fort Collins, CO.

Power 5 programs will be eyeing several of these openers, since UMASS (4-8 in '17) is Boston College's season home opener on 9/1. Boston College (7-6 in '17) is coming off a 27-20 loss in the Pinstripe Bowl to the Iowa Hawkeyes (8-5). Other Power 5 programs with an eye on Week 0:
  • Washington State (9-4) will be Wyoming (8-5), who host the Cougars on 9/1 in Laramie
  • Minnesota (5-7) will be eyeing New Mexico State (7-6), since the Golden Gophers will host the Aggies on Thursday night in TCF Bank Stadium for the season opener
  • Colorado (5-7) will be eyeing Colorado State, as they kickoff the state rivalry game in Denver
This first Saturday in College Football has become popular for a Top 25 FCS showdown, as #6 Jacksonville State (10-3 in '17) and #14 North Carolina A&T (12-0 in '17) kickoff the season.

Looking at the Mountain West Conference heading into 2018. Stassen Composite has the West and Mountain divisions trending as follows:

  5. Hawaii
  6. San Jose State
  • Mountain Division break down for 2018
  1. Boise State - the defending champions are projected #21 by Stassen in the Top 25!

Game Day Iowa: Wyoming Cowboys and Iowa Hawkeyes open 2017 at Kinnick Stadium

Iowa City, IA -- The Iowa Hawkeyes (8-5 in 2016) kickoff their 128th season at historic Kinnick Stadium, as the Wyoming Cowboys (8-6 in 2016) come to town, for the first time, since 1953. Both teams are coming off an 8-4 regular season, as the Big Ten vs. MWC showdown kicks off at 11 a.m. at Kinnick Stadium, and on the Big Ten Network.

Both teams defeated two Top 25 opponents in 2016.
Wyoming @ Iowa from Kinnick Stadium, 11 a.m. on BTN.

This is the first meeting between Iowa and Wyoming in 20 years, since the 1987 Holiday Bowl, where the Hawkeyes pulled out a 20-19 win late. Iowa leads the series 2-0, winning the only other game, 21-7, in Iowa City, in 1953.

Junior 6 FS Marcus Epps, sophomore 30 MLB Logan Wilson,
junior 17 QB Josh Allen and senior 36 FB Drew Van Maanan
will serve as game captains for the Cowboys in the season opener
at Iowa.
At quarterback, Wyoming has a gunslinger in junior Josh Allen, who has NFL aspirations, after a breakout season in 2016. The Iowa Hawkeyes must replace C.J. Beathard, who lead Iowa to a 21-7 record, since becoming the full-time starter in 2015. Iowa will go with true sophomore Nate Stanley, who beat our junior Tyler Wiegers for the job.

Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz is the dean of College Football.
He will open 2017, with a first- year starter and the Hawkeyes
choose true sophomore QB 4 Nate Stanley for the task.
Both teams are inexperienced at the receivers position, with Iowa returning only one wide receiver, senior Matt VandeBerg, with a catch as a Hawkeye. The Cowboys must replace 25 of 28 TD receptions, as sophomore WR C.J. Johnson is the only returner on the other end of an Allen TD pass from 2016.

Both Iowa and Wyoming were interested in the services of true
sophomore Iowa 87 TE Noah Fant, who came out of Omaha.
Fant caught 9 passes for 70 yards, 1 TD in 2016 for the Hawks.
Iowa has a young, TE corp, lead by sophomore Noah Fant and redshirt freshman T.J. Hockenson. The Hawkeyes will use many of the 8 tight ends on the roster in 2017. Last year's starting TE George Kittle joins QB Beathard on the San Franciso 49ers roster for 2017. This unit is one to watch, in the passing game for young Stanley at Iowa in 2017.

Iowa senior RB 25 Akrum Wadley leads the Iowa ground game.
Wyoming lost both their number 1 and number 2 running backs from 2016. The Hawkeyes are the only team in FBS to return two 1,000 yard rushers, as senior Akrum Wadley and senior grad transfer James Butler, from Nevada, lead the likely four deep RB unit for the Hawkeyes. The Cowboys lost talented RB Brian Hill, so a three player committee is likely, with junior Nico Evans, sophomores Milo Hall and Kellen Overstreet. This is an area where the Hawkeyes have a clear advantage.

Iowa offensive line: senior RT 75 Ike Boettger, senior RG 79
Sean Welsh, junior C 78 James Daniels, junior LG 68 Keegan Render,
and senior LT 52 Boone Myers, who all bring starting experience.

The ground game all begins up front with the offensive line. The Hawkeyes are an experienced, veteran bunch, with three seniors and two juniors in the line up. Wyoming returns four of five offensive line starters, but the center position will be manned by a true freshman in 2017, as Logan Harris replaces all-MWC center Chase Roullier.

Iowa senior MLB 43 Josey Jewell leads the Hawkeyes defense again.
A pre-season all-American at linebacker, with a group that returns
6 of 7 in the front 7 for the Hawkeyes.
Both Iowa and Wyoming return eight starters on defense, though the Hawkeyes will begin 2017, without junior free safety Brandon Snyder, out with a knee injury. The Hawkeyes were a Top 25 defense in 2016, while the Cowboys were in the bottom 25 of defenses in 2016.

Iowa Kirk Ferentz is now the dean of College Football, entering
his 19th season as head coach, 28th overall for the Hawkeyes.
Iowa's Kirk Ferentz is now the dean of College Football, entering his 19th season, as head coach. Back in 1999, Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl was the defensive coordinator at Nebraska, when Ferentz debuted as Iowa's head coach. Iowa lacked Big Ten bodies in the trenches, when Ferentz arrived in Iowa City, back in 1999. It isn't the case entering 2017, where Iowa's strengths are in the offensive and defensive lines heading into the season.

Like the 2013 Hawkeyes, Iowa returns three senior starters at LB
to kickoff the season, as 41 WLB Bo Bower, 43 MLB Josey Jewell,
and 44 LEO Ben Niemann all return. This should be a strong unit.
Iowa's strength on defense is the linebacker unit, with all three starters returning, while the heart of the Wyoming defense is the secondary, lead by two very good safeties, who lead the Cowboys in tackles in 2016.

Iowa senior Matt VandeBerg is coming back off a foot injury in 2017.
VandeBerg will step out as Iowa's punt returner again. He played
PR during his sophomore season and the Hawkeyes look to make
impact plays in special teams in 2017.
In a season opener, special teams can play a huge role in the outcome. In 2007, the nation all remembers Appalachian State blocking a FG to secure the 34-32 upset over the Michigan Wolverines.

Both Iowa and Wyoming have new punters and young placekickers. The return game should be solid for both teams. Miscues, penalties and special teams are often keys to watch in season openers. Both teams enter the 2017 season with some promise and some unknowns.

Prediction: Iowa 33, Wyoming 19
The Hawkeyes are able to get the ground game going, with
RBs Akrum Wadley, James Butler, Toren Young and Ivory Kelly-Martin.
How well have the Hawkeyes and Cowboys improved or stayed the same entering 2017?

Wisconsin took care of business over Utah State; while Iowa and Northwestern look to keep up with the Badgers, as Big Ten West teams square off against MWC programs, as Wyoming and Nevada come to Iowa City and Evanston, respectively.

Look for the Hawkeyes and Wildcats to join the Badgers at 1-0, after Week 1 of the 2017 College Football season.

•  Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin will all look to repeat as division champions this season, as the Badgers finished 7-2 to win the Big Ten West Division and the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions both completed the season with 8-1 marks to finish tied atop the East Division. Ranking the Big Ten heading into 2017 ...
  1. Penn State - defending champions look to repeat in Year 4 under James Franklin ...
  2. Ohio State - Urban Meyer's seventh season is primed for a B1G run and another birth in the CFP, but over the past two season, the Buckeyes have fallen once and missed out in Indy!
  3. Wisconsin - consistency has become a staple for AD Barry Alvarez's Badgers, who begin Year 3 under Paul Chryst.
  4. Michigan - Jim Harbaugh opens 2017 with only five starters back, as the Wolverines look to climb the B1G ladder in Year 3 ...
  5. Northwestern - could this be the year for the Wildcats and Pat Fitzgerald to break out in the B1G West?
  6. Michigan State - this may appear to be a little high, but Mark Dantonio is looking to rebound, after 1-8 campaign last season.
  7. Iowa - the Hawkeyes are home to the dean of college football, as Kirk Ferentz enters his 19th season at the helm ...
  8. Nebraska - the Mike Riley era turns 3, with a new QB, Tanner Lee, new DC, Bobby Diaco, with a new 3-4 defense to unveil in Lincoln ...
  9. Indiana - new head coach Tom Allen hosts his former boss, new Ohio State OC Kevin Wilson, in the biggest game in Bloomington, since the 1967 championship season, 50 years ago!
  10. Maryland - D.J. Durkin enters Year 2, with a challenging road trip to Austin ...
  11. Minnesota - the P.J. Fleck era begins, with some urban renewal needed, as the row the boat mantra moves from the MAC to the Big Ten ...
  12. Purdue - the Jeff Brohm era begins, with a match up against his alma mater in Indianapolis ...
  13. Illinois - Lovie Smith enters Year 2 with questions in the trenches ...
  14. Rutgers - there is a lot of work to do, entering Year 2 under Chris Ash ...
  • Does the Big Ten get a team in the College Football Playoff in 2017?
  • Alabama vs. Florida State is a heck of kickoff match up on Saturday
  • Can the Big 12 get back into the CFP picture in 2017?
  • Can Clemson stay on top, after winning it all in 2017?
  • Does the Pac 12 keep improving in 2017?
  • Does anyone other than Alabama represent the SEC nationally?
It should be a great kickoff weekend in 2017 ...

The 2011-12 Bowl Season kicks off on Saturday with 3 Bowl Match Ups

The FBS kicks off the first of 35 bowl games in 2011-12, with the first three bowl games on Saturday. Too many? Sure, but when one considers 68 teams make the NCAA Basketball Tournament, is it that far fetched that 70 teams finish the season with a bowl game?

Big Ten leads with ten bowl spots. The Big Ten has a record ten teams in bowl games this year, including first-year member, Nebraska. The University of Iowa is playing in its tenth bowl in eleven years, under Kirk Ferentz, who is in his 13 season as head coach. Wisconsin will represent the Big Ten for the second straight year in the Rose Bowl.

Three other college football games play on Saturday. The Division II Championship Game and the NAIA Championship Game are played on Saturday, as well as the second semi-final game on the road to the FCS title game. On Friday, the first semi-final game in FCS was played, with Sam Houston State defeating Montana 31-28 at home.

Cidsports Thoughts and Predictions on the three opening bowl games:

Temple (8-4, 5-3 MAC East) vs. Wyoming (8-4, 5-2 MWC) in New Mexico Bowl

  • First year coach Steve Addazio's Owls vs. third year coach Dave Christensen's Cowboys

  • Both teams last bowl games were in 2009, Christensen's Cowboys won in New Mexico over Fresno State, while the Owls lost to UCLA in the EagleBank

  • Owls are 1-2 lifetime in bowls, while Cowboys are 6-6

  • We will take the Cowboys, as a +7 underdog in this bowl game

Ohio U (9-4, 6-2 MAC East) vs. Utah State (7-5, 5-2 WAC) in Idaho Potato Bowl

  • Seven year coach Frank Solich's Bobcats vs. third year coach Gary Anderson's Aggies

  • Solich is leading the Bobcats to third straight bowl game, fourth in six years, while Anderson has the Aggies in their first bowl game, since '97 season

  • Ohio U is 0-5 in bowls, while Utah State is 1-4 over the years

  • Again, we will take the underdog, Ohio U as a +1.5 underdog in this bowl game

Louisiana-Lafayette (8-4, 6-2 Sun Belt) vs. San Diego State (8-4, 4-3 MWC) in New Orleans Bowl

  • Battle of first year coaches: Mark Hudspeth's Ragin' Cajuns vs. Rocky Long's Aztecs

  • Ragin' Cajuns have never played in an FBS bowl, while the Aztecs beat Navy last season 35-14 in the Poinsettia Bowl

  • San Diego State is 2-4 lifetime in bowl games, while it is the first postseason appearance in 41 years for the Ragin' Cajuns

  • San Diego State is a -4.5 favorite in this bowl game: Go Aztecs!

Exciting finish in New Mexico, with next bowl coming up in St. Petersburg

Great finish in the first bowl game of the season with Wyoming defeating Fresno State in OT 35-28 in the New Mexico Bowl to kick off the 2009-10 bowl season.

Next up:
Sat., Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. Central Time
St. Petersburg Bowl from St. Petersburg, Fla.
Big East vs. C-USA: Rutgers vs. Central Florida

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights were picked by some in the pre-season to be the top contender in the Big East Conference in 2009, but the Scarlet Knights finished 3-4, tied for fourth in the Big East, and 8-4 overall. Central Florida Knights didn't enter the 2009 season with high expectations, but finished second in the C-USA East Division at 6-2, 8-4 overall for the 2009 season.

Rutgers was 8-5 in 2008 and won 29-23 in the Papajohns.com Bowl 29-23 over North Carolina State, while Central Florida finished 4-8 in 2008 and have only played in two bowl games in the school's history, losing both games, including the 2007 Liberty Bowl 3-10 to Mississippi State. Rutgers is 3-2 all-time in bowl games.

Prediction for the St. Petersburg Bowl:
Could three be the charm, as the Central Florida plays in its third bowl ever vs. a Rutgers team that is seeking to win their fourth straight bowl game in four years.

Rutgers 38, Central Florida 26

peace

Sidenote: Iowa beats Drake in basketball to stop a two game skid in the series, as well as win one of the three games in the Iowa Four Pack series. Creighton travels to undefeated New Mexico to face Steve Alford's club that is rising in the Top 25 right now.

The 2009-10 College Football Bowl Season kicks off on Saturday, December 19, 2009 through Thursday, January 7, 2010

Saturday, December 19, 2009 kicks off the bowl season for 2009-10 through Christmas, the holiday season, the New Year and closing out on Thursday, January 7, 2009 with the BCS Title Game from Pasadena, California in the Rose Bowl, with the #Alabama Crimson Tide facing #2 Texas Longhorn (though my #3 team, behind #2 TCU) for the BCS title.

Today, the 2009 New Mexico Bowl will kick off at 3:30 pm, Central Time, in Albuquerque, New Mexico with the Mountain West vs. WAC with a game matching Wyoming vs. Fresno State. ESPN Preview of the game between Wyoming and Fresno State.

Phil Steele's preview magazine picked Fresno State at the beginning of the season to play again in the New Mexico Bowl, but to face Utah (MWC), who are headed to the Poinsettia vs. Cal on Wednesday, December 23Rd.

The Wyoming Cowboys finished 5Th in the MWC with a 6-6 overall record and 4-4 in conference play. The Cowboys went 0-4 against four Top 25 teams in 2009 (#3 Texas, @ #21 Utah, #14 BYU and #2 TCU). Wyoming is coached by first year coach Dave Christensen, who was OC at Missouri prior to accepting the job in Laramie.

The Cowboys were 4-8 in 2008 and are headed to their first bowl, since the 2004 season, when the Cowboys beat UCLA 24-21 in the Las Vegas Bowl. The Cowboys are looking to get to .500 in bowls, bringing a 5-6 mark into the New Mexico Bowl vs. Fresno State.

The Fresno State Bulldogs finished 3Rd in the WAC with a 8-4 overall record and 6-2 in conference play. The Bulldogs went 0-3 against four Top 25 teams in 2009 (@ #24 Wisconsin, #6 Boise State and @ #5 Cincinnati) all in September of the regular season.

The Bulldogs were 7-6 in 2008 and lost in the New Mexico Bowl 35-40 to Colorado State (MWC team) in last year's game. The Bulldogs bring a 10-8 bowl mark to Albuquerque this season. The last bowl win for the Bulldogs was 2007, when Fresno State defeated Georgia Tech 40-28 in the Humanitarian Bowl in coach Chan Gailey's final season at Georgia Tech.

Can David knock off Goliath in New Mexico? The Wyoming Cowboys are trying to obtain their first winning season, since the 2004 season. The top QB for the Cowboys is a freshman right out of San Jose CA, Austyn Carta-Samuels who is 6-2 210 and was a Phil Steele #85 rated QB out of high school last season. Fresno State is lead by first year starter, QB Ryan Colburn, a junior.

Most of the wins this season by Wyoming was with 30 points on the score board. They had one win where they beat New Mexico 37-13 at home and scored over 30 points. By the way, the Cowboys haven't won in New Mexico, since the 2006 season. Fresno State is far superior football program to the Lobos (3-7-1 in bowls), who won the '07 New Mexico Bowl.

Only two teams have held Fresno State under 30 points all season. In those two games, Fresno State lost @ # 5 Cincinnati (L, 20-28) and @ Nevada (L, 14-52), so defense is key. Teams have put up points on Fresno State, but winning those shootouts can be dangerous, as the Illinois Fighting Illini found out, in a 52-53 loss to end the Fighting Illini's season.

  • Wyoming wins if the game is 28 points or less

  • Fresno State wins, if they can force enough points and make it a shoot out, over 35 points

  • MWC is a better conference than the WAC and will be going for its third straight win, since San Jose State's 20-12 win over New Mexico in the 2006 New Mexico Bowl

Our pick: Wyoming 30, Fresno State 25... Go Cowboys and Happy Holidays!

peace

College Football '09: A look at the Mountain West Conference

Does the Mountain West Conference make BCS noise again in '09? Who is the candidate for '09? How does the conference breakdown in '09 for MWC?

  • The MWC is ranked #10 by Jeff Sagarin among the FBS conferences

  • No non-BCS conference team has ever played in the BCS Title Game and not likely anytime soon

  • The MWC in '08 put into question a little the viewpoint: Why does the Big East have automatic BCS bowl slot compared to the MWC this year?

  • Will there be another BCS bid in '09 for the WAC?

Ranked teams in the AP and Coaches' preseason polls:

  • TCU at #17
  • Utah at #19 and #18, respectively
  • BYU at #20 and #24, respectively

Preseason magazines like other MWC teams in the Top 25 preseason:

none, but the 3 Top 25 are well liked by most magazines too

Teams in the MWC not ready for prime time in 2009?

  • San Diego State
  • Wyoming
  • New Mexico
Will the MWC finish this way in 2009??

  1. Utah * (8-0 in '08) (11-3 in bowls)
  2. TCU (7-1) (11-13-1)
  3. BYU (6-2) (9-17-1)
  4. Air Force (5-3) (8-10-1)
  5. UNLV (2-6) (3-0)
  6. Colorado State (4-4) (5-7)
  7. New Mexico (2-6) (3-7-1)
  8. San Diego State (1-7) (1-4)
  9. Wyoming (1-7) (5-6)

denotes 2008 MWC champs (source for above list)

Last BCS bowl participant
  • Utah went 12-0 during the 2008 regular season (W, Sugar over Alabama 31-17)

Is the MWC home of the non-BCS big Hope in '08?

Who will make the BCS bowls in 2008? A lot of discussion about Georgia and Ohio State these days. What conference outside the Big Six will carry the non-BCS conference banner this season?

Will one among the Mountain West Conference be one of the BCS bowl participants in 2008?

The Mountain West Conference carried the banner in 2004, with Utah, who beat Pittsburgh 35-7 in the Fiesta Bowl. The Western Athletic Conference has carried the banner the past two seasons. This year's popular choice this year could lead the the MWC back in line as the top non-BCS flag carrier.

Brigham Young is a preseason consensus Top 25 member. They are the most popular candidate among the non-BCS programs to crash the BCS party in '08. While not a consensus pick, Utah is a candidate for the Top 25, as well, from the MWC.

Top 15 OOC MWC games:
  1. Utah at Michigan in season opener
  2. Brigham Young at Washington
  3. Oregon State at Utah
  4. UCLA at Brigham Young
  5. Stanford at TCU
  6. Colorado State vs. Colorado in season opener (in Denver)
  7. Iowa State at UNLV
  8. Arizona at New Mexico
  9. Texas A&M at New Mexico
  10. TCU at Oklahoma
  11. UNLV at Arizona State
  12. Wyoming at Tennessee
  13. San Diego State at Notre Dame
  14. Colorado State at California
  15. Northern Iowa at Brigham Young in season opener

The MWC looks to grab the flag over the WAC and all others among the non-BCS to carrier the banner in '08. Will the MWC grab it again? Will have to see the season unfold to find out.

So, who do I like in the MWC race in '08?

  1. Brigham Young Cougars (8-0 in '07) enter their fourth year under coach Bronco Mendenhall and will have to weather having a target on their backs in '08 to prevail.
  2. Utah Utes (6-2 in '07) enter their fourth year under Kyle Whittingham and will look to win their first MWC title, since '04 and Urban Meyer's final team in Salt Lake City that saw the Utes earn and win a BCS bowl game.
  3. TCU Horned Frogs (4-4 in '07) will welcome their eighth season under coach Gary Patterson, who is best known for his defense and should have one of the better units in the MWC.
  4. New Mexico Lobos (5-3 in '07) host the dean of the MWC with coach Rocky Long, who will build off last year's success and a 23-0 win over Nevada in the New Mexico Bowl.
  5. Wyoming Cowboys (2-6 in '07) are lead by coach Joe Glenn, entering his sixth season... with junior QB Karsten Sween and senior RB Devin Moore leading the offense!
  6. San Diego State Aztecs (3-5 in '07) look for better play in coach Chuck Long's thrid campaign as the Aztecs head man!
  7. UNLV Rebels (1-7 in '07) begin year four under coach Mike Sanford and look to get out of the cellar after four straight seasons there in the MWC.
  8. Air Force Falcons (6-2 in '07) may have a tougher second year with coach Troy Calhoun at the helm in Colorado Springs.
  9. Colorado State Rams (2-6 in '07) welcome the new coach in the MWC with Steve Fairchild replacing long-time coach Sonny Lubick.
  • Biggest Game and Rivalry: Nov. 22 - BYU at Utah in "The Holy War" rivalry game
  • Next Best Game: TCU at New Mexico in season opener
  • Coach of the Year: Bronco Mendenhall, BYU

So, the MWC hopes to garner a BCS game or bust, in '08!
