The Washington Warriors take care of business at Kingston Stadium over the Iowa City West High Trojans. Nice victory and a great game for RB Andre Dawson, with over 200 yards rushing, topping the 1000 yard mark for the season and 4 TDs.

Warriors lead I.C. West at halftime 27-14, but what will a key injury to ...

QB Shay Gutman injured his knee on the final play of the half for Washington, where the Warriors took a 27-14 lead. The Warriors scored on all four drives of the second half. Apparently Gutman is going to make a go of it. Hopefully, the young man is not seriously hurt. The Warriors open with the ball in the 2ND half.

A couple College Football games before Saturday's action

Thursday night at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Washington High School will work to get back on track with their winning ways, as they host Prairie in football. #1 City High of Iowa City gave the Warriors a smack down last Friday night.

#5 Warriors beat #3 Tigers at Kingston (nicely improved Kingston at that)!

The Cedar Rapids Warriors (1-0), ranked #5, defeated the #3 Cedar Falls Tigers (0-1) 28-10 at Kingston Stadium, Friday night. The game was closer in the first half. The game nearly saw a huge momentum shift in the first half, only to see the Warriors take a 14-10 halftime lead, after the Tigers last second drive ended with a turnover in the Warrior redzone.

Time of possession was all in favor of the Warriors, lead by the Warrior running game. Turnovers were another key, with the Tigers losing two interceptions inside the Warriors redzone and also gave up a fumble inside the Warriors 30 yard line.

Cedar Falls didn't have the penalties that Washington had: 4 to 10, but the turnovers really turned out to be the difference in the ball game. Early on, it looked like Cedar Falls was going to cause the Warriors trouble, especially after the Tigers responded to the first Warriors touchdown, with a touchdown drive on their own.

The Warriors need to clean up on many aspects of their game. Penalties hurt the offense and placed the Warriors in long down situations. The pass defense was exposed, though the Warriors did get the Cedar Falls offense to rush some things with their pass rush. Special teams coverage, especially on kickoffs, needs to get better.

The Warriors don't have much time to get ready. Washington travels to Iowa City to face the City High Little Hawks in Week 2, Friday, September 3, 2009. City High got off to a great start in Week 1 defeating Dubuque Wahlert on the road.

Ed Thomas to be on Sports Illustrated cover for July 6, 2009

The July 6, 2009 story in Sports Illustrated is titled "he Was The Rock That This Community Was Built On". On the cover, the headline says "A Good Man Down"... Tragedy in the Heartland... A Murder of a Beloved High School Coach by Lee Jenkins.

Clearly Ed Thomas was a remarkable man. God fearing and community driven, he helped lead the small community of Parkersburg, Iowa in the classroom, on the field, in the Church and in the Community. RIP and thank you for your contribution to humanity.

2005 NFL High school coach of the year is murdered during weightlifting class at Aplington-Parkersburg

Coach Ed Thomas was a coach and leader for a high school football team, a high school in general as Athletic Director and the community at large as a neighbor and friend. He was a loving husband and father of two sons. Tragically, his life was cut short by a disturbed 24-year old former player in the morning of June 24, 2009, as 20 students were participating in weightlifting.

Coach Thomas was a strong force behind the rebuilding of the City of Parkersburg that was devestated by a terrible EF5 tornado Memorial Day Weekend 2008. The high school was destroyed, along with Coach Thomas own home.

Coach Thomas was the NFL high school coach of the year in 2005. Four current NFL players: Aaron Kampann (Green Bay), Brad Meester (Jacksonville), Jared DeVries (Detroit) and Casey Wiegmann (Denver) were players for Coach Thomas at Aplington-Parkersburg.

Sadly, society saw a lost 24-year old throw his life away, along with the life of a beloved man, who inspired so many that he meet or those who were able to learn from his story in Parkersburg. It is sad that there is so much hatred or anger in the world today.

May we find peace. May our prayers and thoughts remain with those impacted and touched by this tragic day and this tragic event. Ed Thomas was a fine man and much more to those who really knew him.

Gazette Reports: Sportswriter Jeff Johnson "snuck in" to the newly renovated Kingston Stadium

The Gazette reported in an online article June 22, 2009 titled PHOTOS: 'New' Kingston Stadium under the lights about the New FieldTurf for Kingston Stadium.

The football teams and marching bands will be participating this fall on the new playing surface. Cedar Rapids Washington will be moving their traditional evening marching band practices to Kingston Stadium now that FieldTurf has been installed.

Cedar Rapids Washington handles Bettendorf 48-27

It was a muddy turf, but the Washington Warriors (11-1) capitalized on Bettendorf Bulldogs (11-1) turnovers all game to pull out the Class 4A Iowa Quarter-Final Playoff Game for a 48-27 win at Kingston Stadium. The Warriors threw for nearly 450 yards in the win.

Next up: The UNI Dome in the semi-finals Friday!

Cold Weather returns to Eastern Iowa

It is wet and cold in Cedar Rapids, as Washington High School (10-1) will host Bettendorf High School (11-0) in the Class 4A Quarter-Final Football Playoff Game at Kingston Stadium tonight at 7 pm.

Two Games of personal interest this week...

Friday night in Cedar Rapids: Cedar Rapids Washington (10-1) hosts Bettendorf (11-0) in a Class 4A Quarter-Final Football match up. By the way, in my high school day, the Bulldogs usually had the Warriors number in the state football playoffs.

Saturday afternoon in Iowa City: the Iowa Hawkeyes (5-4, 2-3 Big Ten) will host my #2 Penn State Nittany Lions (9-0, 5-0 Big Ten) in an important Big Ten Conference game at Kinnick Stadium. ABC/ESPN will televise at 2:30 pm.

Weather is certainly taking a turn to cold, after a great week or so of outstanding Autumn weather in Iowa and much of the Midwest.

Cedar Rapids High School Football: Washington vs. Kennedy

Last year, two of the better games ever witnessed were match ups between these two east-side rivals. The regular season game at Kingston Stadium was a 29-27 last second win by Washington. Then, the playoff game between Washington and Kennedy was just as memorable. Both games, Washington scored late in the game to seize victory from the hands of Kennedy. Washington won the playoff game 34-28 in the 4A match up.

It could be another great game at Kingston Stadium tonight. Both teams are 3-1 on the season.
Washington's all-state WR Keenan Davis missed last week's win 41-14 vs. Linn-Mar with a leg injury.

The Gazette reports Davis is "doubtful" tonight, so it should even more of an interesting match up. Coach Tony Lombardi of Washington should have the Warriors ready. Kennedy will be too.

The Gazette has story on Keenen Davis and CR Warriors

The Gazette writer Jeff Dahn has a Sunday article on Keenen Davis and the 2008 Washington Warrior football team online. Hopefully, the online version will correct the error on Warrior QB Wyatt Suess, who The Gazette writer called Warren.

Warren is Wyatt's brother who last played in 2003, helping lead the Warriors to the 2003 Class 4A Championship Game. The Warriors finished runner-up. Like Wyatt who has Davis as a #1 receiver this year, Warren in 2003 had WR Adrian Arrington, who went on to become a quality Big Ten receiver. Davis has a season of high school before he becomes a Big Ten receiver.

The Washington Warriors open at #7 Cedar Falls on Friday. The combination of Wyatt Suess to Keenen Davis will be one weapon to watch in 2008, among others for the Warriors. Like his brother, Wyatt and his Warrior teammates will hopefully make their own run at State in 2008.

Cedar Rapids Washington Warriors WR Keenan Davis Verbals

Incoming high school senior Keenan Davis of Cedar Rapids Washington commits to the University of Iowa today. The highly regarded high school WR now can prepare for his senior season at CwR. The Warriors look to get back to the Dome in '08. The Warriors played in the 2003 Class 4A Iowa State Football Championship Game, finishing as a runner-up.

The Warriors have had a busy off season with a trip to the Chicagoland area for a 7x7 tournament. The Warriors have an excellent group of skill players, including senior QB Wyatt Suess and junior RB Andre Dawson.

Washington Warriors head coach Tony Lombardi is in his third season at the Cedar Rapids school. Last year, the Warriors won two exciting come from behind games vs. Cedar Rapids Kennedy.

The question mark will be in the trenches, again. The Warriors have lacked solid line play, since their 2003 team, which was lead by current Iowa senior C/G Rob Bruggeman. The University of Iowa has three former Warriors on their '08 football roster: Bruggeman, senior LB Gavin McGrath and sophomore RB Paki O'Meara.

Cedar Rapids Washington opens the 2008 season at traditional conference power Cedar Falls on Friday, August 29th. The Warriors home opener at Kingston Stadium is the following Thursday, vs. Iowa City High. The Warriors will face a tough road through the Mississippi Valley Conference in '08.
