It's Thursday, September 30Th and a great MVC match up kicks off tonight at Kingston Stadium with Iowa City High @ Cedar Rapids Washington High School in prep football. It's Homecoming for Washington and the University of Iowa this weekend.

#5 Warriors beat #3 Tigers at Kingston (nicely improved Kingston at that)!

The Cedar Rapids Warriors (1-0), ranked #5, defeated the #3 Cedar Falls Tigers (0-1) 28-10 at Kingston Stadium, Friday night. The game was closer in the first half. The game nearly saw a huge momentum shift in the first half, only to see the Warriors take a 14-10 halftime lead, after the Tigers last second drive ended with a turnover in the Warrior redzone.

Time of possession was all in favor of the Warriors, lead by the Warrior running game. Turnovers were another key, with the Tigers losing two interceptions inside the Warriors redzone and also gave up a fumble inside the Warriors 30 yard line.

Cedar Falls didn't have the penalties that Washington had: 4 to 10, but the turnovers really turned out to be the difference in the ball game. Early on, it looked like Cedar Falls was going to cause the Warriors trouble, especially after the Tigers responded to the first Warriors touchdown, with a touchdown drive on their own.

The Warriors need to clean up on many aspects of their game. Penalties hurt the offense and placed the Warriors in long down situations. The pass defense was exposed, though the Warriors did get the Cedar Falls offense to rush some things with their pass rush. Special teams coverage, especially on kickoffs, needs to get better.

The Warriors don't have much time to get ready. Washington travels to Iowa City to face the City High Little Hawks in Week 2, Friday, September 3, 2009. City High got off to a great start in Week 1 defeating Dubuque Wahlert on the road.

City High at Cedar Rapids Washington tonight

It will likely be a wet field, with all the rain today. Both teams come in 1-0, with City High rated #5 and Washington #3 in the state in 4-A. I was hoping to watch the game at Kingston Stadium, but I may have to settle for radio.

This could be an "explosive" game at Kingston Stadium, as some are projecting. As The Gazette mentioned today... defense and special teams could play a huge role, since both teams have strong offenses.

One Week: CR Warriors open with B2B vs. Top 10 opponents

One week from today, the #3 Cedar Rapids Washington team will travel to the Dome to face #7 Cedar Falls. A very challenging first week for the Warriors, who will have plenty of offensive skill, but questions will have to be determined in the trenches, on both sides of the ball.

The Warriors will open the 2008 Iowa high school football season with back to back games vs. Top 10 competition. The Warriors travel to face the #7 Tigers on August 29th. The follow-up game is the Warriors home opener September 4th, a Thursday night game, at Kingston Stadium vs. City High.

High school football is getting more and more interesting each season here in the State of Iowa. The new expanded Class 4A playoff system will be new in '08.

What type of defense will the Warriors have in '08? Could we see some new wrinkles as some have talked about?

The skill players should be solid at #1 and #2 QB, Wyatt Suess and Derek Giesking, #1 WR Keenan Davis and #1 RB Andre Dawson, with all three starters back at those key positions. The 2007 season was highlighted by two great late-game victories over Cedar Rapids Kennedy, including a first round playoff win.
