Friday Night Lights, as Appalachian State's Thursday night bid for an upset falls short in OT

Cedar Rapids, IA -- The 2016 College Football season kicked off with the Sydney Cup in Australia, last Saturday, then a host of games on Thursday night, including a thriller in OT in Knoxville, as Tennessee.

In Australia, the Cal Bears defeated Hawaii' 51-31 in Week 0, played on Saturday. Week 1 officially kicked off on Thursday night and will run through Labor Day, which is the new norm in College Football.

Junior QB #11 Taylor Lamb lead the Mountaineers offense,
who lead for 40 minutes over the #7 rank Volunteers
Appalachian State University football came up one bounce of the football from upsetting 100,000-plus fans again. The game was played nine years to the day, from the win in 2007, in Ann Arbor. This time in Knoxville, against the same offensive coordinator Mike DeBord, who coached at Michigan in 2007.

Tennessee’s Jalen Hurd recovered a Josh Dobbs' fumble in the end zone for the only score in overtime as the Volunteers held off a determined Appalachian State team on Thursday night in Neyland Stadium, 20-13.

Appalachian State (0-1) led for 40 minutes, never trailed in regulation, and held #7 Tennessee to 319 yards of offense, less than 300 in regulation. The Mountaineers outhit and outplayed Tennessee (1-0) for the first three quarters, leading 13-3 at half and holding the Vols out of the end zone until 10:30 left in the game. Tennessee scored 17 unanswered point to pull out the win on Thursday night.

The Big Ten plays game three tonight, as defending Big Ten champion Michigan State kicks off the 2016 College Football season.

We fell short in our pick, for an upset in Knoxville on Thursday night. Here is a look at Friday night's action in College Football ...

  • Colorado vs. Colorado State (Denver) 7:00 pm on ESPN - the Buffaloes took care of business 27-24 over the Rams last year, but in 2014, when it was a season opener, CSU took care of business 31-17 ...
  • Northwestern State at #18 Baylor 6:30 pm on FSN Affiliates - a lot has taken place this off season in Waco and prior to the firing of Art Briles ... the Demons are the opening day opponent for the 2016 season under interim coach Jim Grobe at Baylor!

  • Albany at Buffalo 6:00 pm on espn3 - the Bulls are 5-7 in the series, but took care of business 51-14 last year, after the series was renewed, after being idle, since 1988 ...
  • Cal Poly at Nevada 8:30 pm on Nevada Video / MWC Video - the Wolf Pack have won four straight, including a 63-0 blowout back in 1998 last meeting ...
  • Colgate at Syracuse 6:00 pm on WatchESPN - the Orange have won 15 straight against the Raiders, ranked #16 in FCS ...
  • MVSU at Eastern Michigan 5:00 pm on espn3 - the Eagles are 6-1 in home openers against FCS programs, like the Delta Devils. MVSU is 0-8 in previous meetings against FBS programs.
Our preseason rankings were compiled from Stassen.com. Yes, it looks like a good night for the home team.

For me tonight, it is time for a little Iowa high school football, as Cedar Rapids Washington hosts Cedar Rapids Kennedy at Kingston Stadium, in Week 2 of Class 4A, in this inter-district contest.

Boise State and Iowa State hit the East Coast for a Friday night game on ESPN and ESPN2

Friday, September 16Th
Boise State at Toledo 7:00 p.m. ESPN (HD) / espn3
Iowa State at Connecticut 7:00 p.m. ESPN2 (HD) / espn3

Other games this weekend: Week 3 of College Football

Iowa State is off to a 2-0 start after beating in-state programs, UNI and Iowa at home. Now, the Cyclones take to the road for a Big 12-Big East BCS match up with UConn. How will Paul Rhoads' team adjust to a road environment? A win would set up a nice 3-0 mark heading into Big 12 play.

Toledo played Ohio State strong in Week 2. Boise State is the strongest non-BCS program in the FBS this year. This could be an interesting game, if Toledo can keep there emotions in check and step up to another solid opponent. Will they close, unlike Week 2 in Columbus?

Tonight, the Washington Warriors host Dubuque Wahlert at Kingston Stadium on Homecoming weekend. The Warriors fell victims to Kennedy last weekend 28-41. So, will they rebound at home this week?

Not many surprises Day 1 in College Football, but more games to come this Labor Day weekend

Congratulations to Iowa State University on your 27-10 win over Northern Illinois on Thursday night at Jack Trice Stadium. The Cyclones offense did some good things and the defense didn't hurt you, though there is plenty of work to do and clean up in the coming games. ISU will travel to Iowa City to face the University of Iowa in the Cy-Hawk series on Saturday, September 11Th. Look for the Hawkeyes to be a double digit favorite.

  • #2 Ohio State rolls on Marshall

  • #13 Utah beat #22 Pitt in OT 27-24

  • #11 Miami-FL blanks Florida A&M

  • Minnesota and Indiana win to raise Big Ten OOC record to 3-0

  • USC out paces Hawai'i

  • South Carolina rolls over Southern Miss in opener!

Games, Friday, September 3, 2010

  • Villanova at Temple, 4:00 p.m., espn3.com

  • Arizona at Toledo, 7:00 p.m., ESPN (HD)

Temple should roll on Villanova, but Arizona's trip East to Toledo, to play a MAC squad could get interesting.

Will two Wildcat teams (Villanova and Arizona) both get knocked down Friday night? Arizona has had some challenges outside Tucson in the OOC under coach Mike Stoops. There is an excellent opportunity for a non-BCS program to pick up a win tonight. We will go with Arizona by 6, but upset alert warnings could be on the horizon.

Live coverage of week 2 of high school football - The Gazette

Washington (1-0) vs. Jefferson (0-1) @ Kingston Stadium tonight

The East Side vs. West Side match up should be a good one. Senior RB Alex Carr rolled in Week 1 and it should be interesting to see how sophomore QB A.J. Puk performs in his second outing with the Warrior varsity.

Nothing like a rivalry in Week 2 of high school football!

Saturday, September 4Th
Eastern Illinois at # 4 Iowa
11:00 a.m.
BTN (HD)

Iowa will not be at 100%, with four starters likely out, but look for the Hawkeyes to roll on the Panthers from the Ohio Valley Conference on Saturday in Kinnick Stadium.

Our Pick: Iowa 40 Eastern Illinois 9

#5 Warriors beat #3 Tigers at Kingston (nicely improved Kingston at that)!

The Cedar Rapids Warriors (1-0), ranked #5, defeated the #3 Cedar Falls Tigers (0-1) 28-10 at Kingston Stadium, Friday night. The game was closer in the first half. The game nearly saw a huge momentum shift in the first half, only to see the Warriors take a 14-10 halftime lead, after the Tigers last second drive ended with a turnover in the Warrior redzone.

Time of possession was all in favor of the Warriors, lead by the Warrior running game. Turnovers were another key, with the Tigers losing two interceptions inside the Warriors redzone and also gave up a fumble inside the Warriors 30 yard line.

Cedar Falls didn't have the penalties that Washington had: 4 to 10, but the turnovers really turned out to be the difference in the ball game. Early on, it looked like Cedar Falls was going to cause the Warriors trouble, especially after the Tigers responded to the first Warriors touchdown, with a touchdown drive on their own.

The Warriors need to clean up on many aspects of their game. Penalties hurt the offense and placed the Warriors in long down situations. The pass defense was exposed, though the Warriors did get the Cedar Falls offense to rush some things with their pass rush. Special teams coverage, especially on kickoffs, needs to get better.

The Warriors don't have much time to get ready. Washington travels to Iowa City to face the City High Little Hawks in Week 2, Friday, September 3, 2009. City High got off to a great start in Week 1 defeating Dubuque Wahlert on the road.

Cedar Rapids High School Football: Washington vs. Kennedy

Last year, two of the better games ever witnessed were match ups between these two east-side rivals. The regular season game at Kingston Stadium was a 29-27 last second win by Washington. Then, the playoff game between Washington and Kennedy was just as memorable. Both games, Washington scored late in the game to seize victory from the hands of Kennedy. Washington won the playoff game 34-28 in the 4A match up.

It could be another great game at Kingston Stadium tonight. Both teams are 3-1 on the season.
Washington's all-state WR Keenan Davis missed last week's win 41-14 vs. Linn-Mar with a leg injury.

The Gazette reports Davis is "doubtful" tonight, so it should even more of an interesting match up. Coach Tony Lombardi of Washington should have the Warriors ready. Kennedy will be too.

Go Warriors! Warriors by 1.

City High at Cedar Rapids Washington tonight

It will likely be a wet field, with all the rain today. Both teams come in 1-0, with City High rated #5 and Washington #3 in the state in 4-A. I was hoping to watch the game at Kingston Stadium, but I may have to settle for radio.

This could be an "explosive" game at Kingston Stadium, as some are projecting. As The Gazette mentioned today... defense and special teams could play a huge role, since both teams have strong offenses.

Go Warriors!
